Flipped Classroom

Many parents have a tendency to perceive that the learning progress of their child is slower than average.

Some may even go as far as to think that their child may possess learning disabilities.  

 

Do they really have learning disabilities? Or is the current method of teaching unsuitable for them? 

Each child has his own learning style and therefore, compatible teaching methods.

Currently, the traditional education progresses from ‘teaching’ to ‘learning’. When a teacher takes his place in front of the whiteboard, a standard lesson flow commences. Lesson content is dished out in succession, expounded upon, and spoon-fed to the students. However, due to time being a limited resource, coupled with the teacher-to-student ratio, students are unable to fully absorb and commit all the learning points to memory.

 

Thus, we realised the integral role revision plays in the learning process.

 

The issue lies in the majority of students being unable to fully retain the information covered during the lesson. When they finally sit down for revision, a good number of points previously learned have become unfamiliar. When students embark on their assignment with a compromised knowledge base, progress is limited. More importantly, the uphill battle in completing their assignments may cultivate an aversion to learning.

 

Through our conversations with our students, it has been impressed upon us that a good number are keen to revisit lessons as if they were re-watching videos. In doing so, they can repeatedly go through the areas they find challenging, until any bumps in initial learning have been ironed out.

 

 

Indeed, in this digital era where smart devices and the World Wide Web are evolving by the second, why are our teaching methods and materials stagnating at that of our ancestors’ era?

What is the flipped classroom concept?

 

The Flipped Classroom concept is a technology-supported teaching arrangement where students access the preparatory lessons online prior to the lesson. During the actual lesson, the students complete the assignments with the guidance of the teachers, as well as attempt higher difficulty questions.

 


Why the flipped classroom concept?

In the past, all students follow the lesson flow under the guidance of the teacher. Lesson content is dished out in succession, expounded upon, and spoon-fed to the students.

 

While many students may try their utmost best, a multitude of reasons leave them unable to completely absorb the content. In this situation, it is a challenge to complete their assignments. Facing a sizeable number of unsolved questions, it may leave them feeling defeated and inevitably cultivate an aversion to learning.  

 

 

Research has shown that if students are able to effectively complete their assignments, they are able to achieve a higher knowledge retention rate. However, the issue with the traditional teaching method lies in the students being unable to successfully finish their assignments.

 

Therefore, the Flipped Classroom concept allows the learning process to start at home. Students can view the videos repetitively, specifically the parts that they face difficulties grasping in immediate.

 

 

At the same time, they can formulate their inquisitive thoughts prior to the lesson and surface them during the lessons. This will facilitate the process of in-depth discussion during the lesson. After addressing any questions each child may have, the teacher can then reinforce their understanding through attempting higher difficulty questions.
