About Bukit Batok

Bukit Batok is home to an estimated 114,000 HDB residents, and within the town, we manage 40,612 flats (as of 31 March 2018).

The name Bukit Batok was supposedly derived from the Malay words, Bukit (hill), which corresponds to the hilly nature of the region, and Batok, which some thought was an adaptation of ‘batu’ – Malay for granite.

The major development of Bukit Batok into a satellite HDB town started in 1980s.

It has since developed into a self-sufficient town with shopping centres, nature park, stadium, clubhouses, and an industrial park, making it a cohesive living environment for work and play.

Living in Bukit Batok
Tucked within the Western region of Singapore, Bukit Batok has long attracted homebuyers looking for an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

It may not be a community of million-dollar homes, like its neighbouring town Bukit Timah, nor a place defined by highways dotted with shopping malls, like the Central area. Instead, it is a little pocket of walkable streets, neighbourhood parks, and quaint spots emblematic of the heartlands.

Besides the public housing initiatives, Bukit Batok also benefitted from the other efforts to improve public works such as the nation-wide drainage schemes in 1979, which cost $31 million to keep floods at bay floods in low-lying areas. The Pang Sua scheme called for the widening and deepening of the Pang Sua River that ran parallel to Woodlands Road for 14 km from Upper Bukit Timah Road to the Straits of Johore. The completion of this project alleviated flooding in the low-lying areas of Woodland Road, Upper Bukit Timah Road, Bukit Batok and Bukit Panjang. Bukit Batok has since developed into a self-contained new town with shopping centres, a driving centre, nature parks, clubhouses and an industrial park.
